Mega-zines!

When i was small (many many years ago...), my mother used to bring back many interesting magazines for us to read, almost every month. Some that i can remember were Bujal, Dewan Pelajar, Kuntum and magazines by now-banned al-Arqam eg Al-Ain, Al-Mukminah...We also had Variasari full with cerita-cerita misteri nusantara...and of course, Bacaria tabloids :)

Anyone remember Bujal?

I remember al-Arqam's magazines because of their beautiful drawings of Islamic characters including pretty ladies/girls with big eyes wearing hijab. I wasn't wearing proper hijab until secondary school but i guess that was how Mak subtly guiding us to wear hijab. :)

Good magazines are like books - you don't want to throw them away even if they are many months/years old.
And to me, good mags should not have outdated content or content you could easily pick up from Internet for free.

Bad quality papers made magazines only good to read the first few times. Then, it becomes relai and really waste our good money. Those with too many adverts and contests are even worse.

Fashion & trend magazines also get outdated easily.  And forgive my bluntness - but don't these kind of mags make you wanting more of expensive or unnecessary things? They feed us consumers the bad signals of "inadequacy" and makes us feel what we already have are not good enough..

Mom-approved Magazines

Solusi is definitely the House's No. 1 magazine right now, even kak Min pun suka baca.
For the kids, i will get hold of Ana Muslim - Sumayyah shares with her brothers.  It's not really a girls magazine, despite a girlish cover.
Mayyah's favourite

And of course, for Zubayr - it's Upin & Ipin!!
I am so glad, these cute little twins propagate solat, doa and good manners in their stories.
We need these to counter too many rude & violent cartoon characters flooding the channels.

Zubayr punyeee

The other day, i went to Hamid Bros and saw this new mag called Gen Q.

Gen Q- 1st issue

It's a cool, teen-friendly Islamic magazine. Just what i need for Mujahid and Umar.
GenQ's great quality resembles its uncle, Solusi... marvelous content & layout.
I like how it feels in the hands, it is slightly bigger than Readers' Digest but  not too big for them to hold while they lie down to read it.

2nd issue

Sure enough, I grabbed both issues on Hamid Bros' rack.
We are already looking forward to its third issue!
